Bannau Brycheiniog/Brecon Beacons National Park is home to Southern Britain's tallest peak, Pen Y Fan (886m). The car park at the start of the climb is about an hour away by car. If you're looking for an all-day hike, the circular walk around Llyn Y Fan Fach & Llyn Y Fan Fawr is 13km, and takes in the jaw-dropping views atop Picws Du & Fan Brycheiniog. At 802m above sea level, on a clear day you can see for miles into the Carmarthenshire countryside. The start of the walk is a 45 minute drive away.
Take in the breathtaking scenery with hiking and cycling trails that wind through the lush surroundings of Brechfa Forest. There are five main car parks, maintained by Natural Resources Wales.

South West Wales is home to some of the best beaches in the UK, as well as the UK's only coastal National Park, Pembrokeshire Coast. Beaches in Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, and Ceredigion can all be reached within one hour by car; we've listed our favourite four below.
Rhossili Bay (45 miles from shepherd's hut) - Rhossili Bay is regularly voted one of the best beaches in the UK. Lots of walks and incredible views, this is one of our favourite spots to visit, especially in the quieter off season.
Pendine Sands (31 miles) – dramatic cliffs tower over this beautiful beach, where a world land speed record was set in the 1920s. A great spot for a swim or walks along the cliffs.
Tenby (40 miles) – a popular choice during the high season, Tenby North Beach is overlooked by the town's stunning pastel buildings. The beach is home to the dramatic Goscar Rock, a great subject for photographs.
New Quay (32 miles) – there are three main beaches to choose from in New Quay; Harbour Beach, Dolau Beach, and Traeth Gwyn. New Quay is also a great place to take a dolphin spotting boat trip!
We share our smallholding with lots of rescue animals, including alpacas, ponies, horses, goats, chickens, sheep, pigs, and dogs. We rotate them around the various paddocks which you can see from the Shepherd's Hut, so you'll always have company. You can say hello over the fence, but please do not enter any of the paddocks, and watch out as they can all bite/peck!
Our wonderful alpacas can usually be found grazing in the paddocks next to the Shepherd's Hut. They are beautiful, gentle, and curious creatures, and will often come up to investigate you if you remain still and quiet.
The alpacas help keep the grass short, make lovely neighbours for our guests, and help us manage the land in a sustainable way. They are also incredibly hardy, and will usually stay out in all but the most challenging weather.
We offer alpaca meet-and-greet sessions for guests who would like to spend some time with our friendly alpacas. Please get in touch if you would like to book a session (a small additional charge applies).
We are passionate about nature, and so one of our aims is to boost biodiversity and reduce our impact on the land. Whether that's minimising machinery use, removing the use of chemicals as much as possible, or planting trees, we are always thinking of ways to help make space for nature.
Our animals also help us maintain the land in a variety of beneficial ways. Alpacas have soft, padded feet, which minimise soil compaction, and their dung is a rich, natural fertiliser, which helps promote grass growth. Once they are moved onto fresh paddocks, our horses are moved in.
They help create diverse vegetation in areas where they trample the grass, allowing new seeds to germinate. The goats, pigs, ponies, chickens, and sheep all play their part too. While we would love to rescue as many animals as possible, we try to keep our stocking density (the amount of farm animals in a specific area) low, to reduce the impact on the flora & fauna.
If you would like to learn more about what we are doing to boost biodiversity, contact us during your stay and we would be happy to give you a tour of some of the areas we are working on, including:
The shepherd's hut is located at the top of Mynydd Figyn, at an elevation of 310m (1017ft), offering stunning views on all sides. To the East you can see Bannau Brycheiniog/Brecon Beacons and the Carmarthen Fans; to the North-West is Brechfa Forest. There is a short (4.5km) circular route around the single-track road, on which you pass Mynydd Figyn Common, a 30 acre patch of common land that is now a wonderful haven for wildlife.
